Notes

Waxworks is XTC's first real singles collection and contains the A-sides of the band's first 13 singles issued on Virgin, except the 11th single, "Respectable Street."

Most of the tracks are previously released versions. The exceptions: "Making Plans for Nigel" fades out early and "Wait Till Your Boat Goes Down" is remixed, featuring a synthesiser during the extended break.

In Britain, the album was advertised as: "A collection of A-sides from one of Britain's most innovative groups -- and for a limited period Waxworks is packaged with a FREE copy of Beeswax -- a collection of equally innovative B-sides!" The sticker on the cover of the Waxworks and Beeswax package says: "2 ALBUMS FOR THE PRICE OF 1". Some other counties followed suit by marketing Waxworks along with Beeswax.

Andy initially wanted to use wax paper for the cover, but the plan was scrapped by Virgin due to the high production cost.

Notes

In Britain and some other countries, Beeswax was sold together with Waxworks as its companion. For Waxworks, and more about Beeswax, see Waxworks.

Beeswax is loosely comprised of B-sides corresponding to the tracks found on Waxworks. As with Waxworks, almost all tracks are the same versions as those released individually on singles, but note that "Hang On to the Night" is a longer version by a few seconds (unavailable elsewhere) and that "Heaven Is Paved with Broken Glass" is remixed.

Notes

Recorded by Andy Partridge and released as Mr. Partridge. Originally issued between XTC's Drums and Wires and Black Sea, it was later made available on the CD Explode Together (The Dub Experiments '78-'80), which also included Go+.

"If you liked 'Go+' then this record weighs approximately the same amount," says Andy on the cover.

Side A is titled "Take Away" and side B "The Lure of Salvage." In Japan the LP was released under the name of Andy Partridge and the labels say on both sides "TAKE AWAY."

Recording Data:

"This used to be some XTC records. It is now a collection of tracks that have been electronically processed/shattered and layered with other sounds or lyrical pieces."

"Destructed/constructed at Regents Park Recording Company."

"All initial sound by XTC. Additional sound/lyrics by Andy Partridge. Put and take by John Leckie and Andy Partridge on 10.10.79. Alan Jakoby was the tapir."

Trivia:

Andy made Take Away totally royalty-free at a cost of 2,000 pounds, and asked Virgin to set the price low. Virgin sold the album with the maximum price of 3.99 pounds.

The cover picture is taken from a post card of Jayne Mansfield in a swimming pool. The figures floating on the water are hot water bottles shaped of her, some of which Andy scribbled out.

The original XTC songs used for the bases of this LP are:
"Commerciality (Signal Ad)" - "Refrigeration Blues" (an unfinished and unreleased track from White Music; the lyrics were a poem called "Signal Ad (Saleable Futurity)");
"The Day They Pulled the North Pole Down" - "Heatwave" ("This Is Pop?" single B-side);
"The Forgotten Language of Light" - the percussion track of "Millions" from Drums and Wires;
"Steam Fist Futurist" - "Real by Reel" from Drums and Wires;
"Shore Leave Ornithology (Another 1950)" - "Pulsing Pulsing" ("Making Plans for Nigel" single B-side), and was inspired by Charlie Parker's "Ornithology";
"Cairo" - "Homo Safari" ("Life Begins at the Hop" single B-side) with Marianne's handclapping;
"The Rotary" - improvised singing/yelling over stripped down "Helicopter" from Drums and Wires;
"Madhattan" - "That Is the Way" from Drums and Wires;
"I Sit in the Snow" - "Roads Girdle the Globe" from Drums and Wires;
"Work Away Tokyo Day" - the first part is original, and then all nine of Barry Andrews' sax parts from "Red" (Go 2) played simultaneously, followed by "Day In Day Out" (Drums and Wires) sped up very fast and with a new bass line; and
"New Broom" - "Making Plans for Nigel" from Drums and Wires.

Recording Data:

Produced by John Leckie and XTC [credited as John Leckie and The Dukes].

Recorded at Sawmill Studios, Golant, Cornwall, England, April-May 1987. Narration: Lilly Fraser.

A promotional video was made for "Albert Brown."

Trivia:

The band originally intended the sleeve to be incense-scented, but the idea was scrapped at the last moment. The "multi-coloured vinyl" disc did not come out quite as colourful as they had wished.

Read the Song Stories book to learn about the things that inspired XTC to write and arrange the songs on this album.

Notes

Recorded by XTC and released under The Dukes of Stratosphear.

The Dukes of Stratosphear consist of Sir John Johns (Andy), The Red Curtain (Colin), Lord Cornelius Plum (Dave), and E.I.E.I. Owen (drummer Ian Gregory, Dave's younger brother). John Leckie used his Indian spiritual name, crowning it with a title of respect used for a Hindu saint or religious teacher, to become Swami Anand Nagara.

Each Dukes song is credited to Andy or Colin's pseudonym.

Virgin Records' first label logo for LPs from the early '70s, designed by Roger Dean, was specially revived for at least the British, German, and South Korean issues.

Recording Data:

Produced by John Leckie and XTC [credited as John Leckie, Swami Anand Nagara, and 'The DUKES'] and recorded at Chapel Lane Studio, Hampton Bishop, Hereford and Worcester, December 1984.

Musicians: Sir John Johns - singing, guitar, brain buds. The Red Curtain - electric bass, song stuff. Lord Cornelius Plum - mellotron, piano, organ, fuzz-tone guitar. E.I.E.I. Owen - drum set.

A promotional film (not a video!) was made for "The Mole from the Ministry."

Trivia:

"The Dukes of Stratosphear" is the name that Andy originally was tempted to use for the band back in 1975. He eventually settled on XTC because he thought The Dukes sounded too "sixties-ish."

The whole Dukes project was an homage to the bands that Andy, Colin, and Dave wanted to be in when they were in their teens. Read the Song Stories book to learn about the things that inspired XTC to write and arrange the songs on this album.

At one time, The Dukes were almost called Electric Bone Temple.

This mini album outsold the previous XTC LP, The Big Express . . .

Kevin Godley and Lol Creme's Medialab planned to produce a full story video based on the songs on 25 O'Clock. The project never materialised. Read more about this in the news section on this website.

The voice at the end of side A -- "that's the most obscene abomination of a song!" etc. -- is a listener's comment on a song called "Go Fuck Yourself with Your Atom Bomb" on the radio. Producer John Leckie heard it by chance in a car and taped it while he was in New York. The song was played by Tuli Kupferberg, who was in the a poet for the sixties' rock group The Fugs.

The first line of the song "Go Fuck Yourself" is played backwards endlessly at twice its normal speed on the run-out groove of side B. This "endless" feature may be unique to the original British vinyl pressing.

The chattering heard throughout the album is mostly from BBC sound effects records, including a collection of famous quotes about the American Revolution of 1776.

Songs written, demoed, rehearsed, and/or recorded around the 25 O'Clock days include:
"Have You Seen Sydney?" (unreleased; later recorded as "Have You Seen Jackie?" for Psonic Psunspot);
"Nicely Nicely Jane" (rehearsed but never completed);
"Susan Revolving" (rehearsed but never completed); and
"Big Day"* (later recorded for Skylarking).

The first Japanese edition came with a 24-page colour booklet entitled "PICTURE BOOK: THE ART AND SOUL OF XTC," a 14-page booklet of Japanese translations and liner notes, and a postcard to send in for a chance to win two pieces of artwork by Andy, as well as the standard 16-page English lyrics booklet. Personnel: Andy Partridge - vocals and guitar. Colin Moulding - vocals and bass.

Extra musicians: Chuck Sabo - drums on "Playground," "I'm the Man Who Murdered Love," "We're All Light," "Standing In for Joe," "Wounded Horse," "You and the Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful," and "Church of Women." Prairie Prince - drums on "Stupidly Happy," "In Another Life," "My Brown Guitar," and "The Wheel and the Maypole." Matt Vaughn - programming. Nick Davis - the more complicated keyboard parts. Trivia:

Some of the basic tracks (at least of seven songs) on Wasp Star were recorded at Chipping Norton Recording Studios during the Apple Venus Volume 1 sessions. After Volume 1 was released, they were partially re-recorded, including Prairie Prince's drums, at Idea Studios.

"The Wheel and the Maypole" was formerly called "Everything Decays," and a song called "The Pot Won't Hold Your Love" was worked into it.

Demo versions of all the tracks on Wasp Star were later gathered on the album Homegrown: The Wasp Star Home Demos.

Notes

In early 1999 an advance CD entitled a is for... (which continues onto the back cover: "...ADVANCE COPY OF THE XTC NEW ALBUM APPLE VENUS VOLUME 1") was prepared in the UK and USA for promotional purposes. Although it contained the same tracks as the commercially released album, it came in a paper sleeve with a different cover design, with catalogue numbers of COOK CD 172P (UK) and TVT 3250-2A (USA).

The first Japanese issue included a 24-page full-colour booklet of photographs and English lyrics, a 20-page booklet of Japanese translations and liner notes, and a postcard to send in for a chance to win autographed photographs, all housed in a thicker-than-usual jewel case.

The feather on the cover points to the left in some countries' editions and to the bottom in others. Also, the information on the back cover reads from the left in some editions and from the right in others...

Trivia:

With about 40 songs written between Andy and Colin during the industrial action the band took against Virgin Records, Andy originally wanted to make a double album comprising of one "orchoustic" disc and one electric disc, but it was not to be. XTC left Virgin after 19 years and in 1997 set up their own Idea Records, from which Apple Venus Volume 1 was launched.

"Greenman" was proposed as the third single and a promotional video for the song was shot, but the plan was abandoned halfway through.

"Your Dictionary" was formerly called "Dictionary of Doubt."

After Nonsuch, XTC wanted to release an album called Somesuch, a demo track collection of the songs on Nonsuch.

Virgin did not take it seriously. The band then proposed that they make an imaginary compilation album of bubblegum songs by imaginary bands on an imaginary label called Zither Records.

Virgin did not take that seriously, either. These bubblegum songs included such Andy Partridge compositions as "All Aboard for Bubble Land", "Candymine" (demo version released on Andy Partridge EP), "Cave Girl", "Cherry in Your Tree" (released on the Carmen Sandiego compilation CD), "It's Snowing Angels" (demo version released on Window Box), and "Visit to the Doctor", as well as Colin's "Don't Come Crying to Me."

The band names Andy thought up, not necessarily just for the bubblegum project, include: Ancient Grease, Anonymous Bosch, The Brighton Peers, Cake's Progress, The Captain Cooks (which was meant for "Cherry in Your Tree"), The Four Posters, Funnel of Love, The Herbert Fountains, Irving Merlin, Isambard Kingdom Necessary on a Bicycle, Jellyache, Kitchener's Sink, The Lollipopes, The Periwig Pack, The Piccadilly Circus Tent Rip Repair Company, The Rubber Ducks, Sopwith Caramel, The Tweedledeens, and The Twelve Flavours of Hercules.

Before Apple Venus Volume 1 was completed, XTC's budget ran out, Dave Gregory left the band, and original producer Haydn Bendall moved on to some other project ...

Demo versions of all the tracks on Apple Venus Volume 1 were later collected on the album Homespun: The Apple Venus Volume One Home Demos.

Of all the songs recorded in the Apple Venus Volume 1 sessions, about half ended up on the next album Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2) the following year, but some tracks were still left out. Songs that were written, demoed, rehearsed, and/or recorded around the Apple Venus days and still elude proper studio recording include:
"Bumper Cars" (demo version appeared on Japanese Homegrown);
"Child's Night"*;
"Dame Fortune";
"I Don't Want to Be Here" (originally written for Cathy Dennis);
"Life Is Always";
"Mates"*;
"New Country Squire"*;
"Prince of Orange" (demo version released on Andy Partridge EP);
"The Ship Trapped in the Ice";
and "Wonder Annual."
All songs written by Andy Partridge and *Colin Moulding.

In addition, Andy's four songs originally written for the Disney film James and the Giant Peach were considered for the Apple Venus project, but are still in the vaults. These songs are "All I Dream of Is a Friend," "Don't Let Us Bug Ya," "Everything Will Be Alright," and "The Stinking Rich Song."

Recording Data:

Produced by Paul Fox and XTC. Engineered by Ed Thacker. Assisted by Joe Fiorello, Tim Weidner and Clark Germain.

Personnel: Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, and Dave Gregory. With: Pat Mastelotto - drums and percussions. Mark Isham - trumpet. Paul Fox - keyboards. Parthenon Huxley - tambourine on "Cynical Days." Franne Golde - chorus on "Poor Skeleton." Jean McLean - chorus on "Poor Skeleton" and "One of the Millions."

Mastered by Steven Marcussen at Precision.

Trivia:

"Across This Antheap" was originally intended for Skylarking.

The "Ermine Street" sung about in "Chalkhills and Children" is in reality the Roman road that ran from a point near Pevensey, East Essex, to York, passing through London and Lincoln.

"Gangway, Electric Guitar Is Coming Through," originally written for Skylarking, was considered again for Oranges & Lemons and included in the demo tape sent to Paul Fox prior to the recording of the album. However, it is not certain whether that was the same version as the Skylarking version sent to Todd Rundgren.

"My Train Is Coming," the song Andy originally wrote for the film Buster, which was rejected by Phil Collins, was recorded with Mike Kennearlly (guitarist with Frank Zappa's band) during the Oranges & Lemons sessions, but was left unfinished without vocals.

Songs written, demoed, rehearsed, and/or recorded around the Oranges & Lemons days include:
"Blue Beret" (unreleased; several live versions broadcast on radio shows);
"Ella Guru" (by Don Van Vliet, "Simpleton" 12" B-side and CD EP);
"Everything" (demo version released on The Bull with the Golden Guts);
"The Good Things"* (demo version released on "Mayor of Simpleton" CD EP, re-recorded version released on Testimonial Dinner: The Songs of XTC);
"Living in a Haunted Heart" (demo version released on "Simpleton" CD EP);
"My Paint Heroes" (demo version released on "King for a Day" CD EP);
"My Train Is Coming" (demo version released on The Bull with the Golden Guts);
"Skeletons"* (demo version released on "King for a Day" CD EP); and
"This Is the End" (demo version released on The Bull with the Golden Guts).
All songs written by Andy Partridge and *Colin Moulding.

The first 10,000 copies of the UK edition used gold ink for the picture on the cover, which was embossed to give the design texture. Subsequent copies were printed brown on a non-embossed cover.

Notes

This is the revised edition issued after "Dear God" became a hit single in North America, dropping "Mermaid Smiled" from the original track list in favour of "Dear God." The Canadian edition separated "Dear God" from the next track, "Dying," while the American joined them together.

The US reissue edition was also sold through a record club. These copies have "Manufactured by Columbia House Under License" printed at the bottom left of the back cover.

reissue - digitally remastered; obi; embossed cardboard sleeve; paper sleeve; foldout insert

Notes

Adds an extra track, "Dear God," to Version 1.

All three of these Canadian issues had the cover drawing printed on a patterned background, just like the original LP. They included an 8-page folded insert rather than a booklet, with the cover picture drawn in black.

The Japanese edition is one of the "XTC Original Paper Sleeve Collection" series. The disc label reproduces the original LP's design, and does not list the bonus track "Dear God."

Recording Data:

Produced and engineered by Todd Rundgren for Alchemedia Productions. Continuity concept by Todd Rundgren.

Mixed at Utopia Sound Studios, Woodstock, NY. Assistant engineers -- Kim Foscato and George Cowan.

Personnel: Andy Partridge - vocals, guitar. Colin Moulding - vocals, bass guitar, and bonfire. Dave Gregory - vocals, guitar, piano, synthesiser, chamberlain, and the odd tipple.

All backing vocals by the Beech Avenue Boys. The part of the time bomb was played by Prairie Prince. Orchestral arrangements and computer programming by Todd Rundgren. Strings arranged for "1000 Umbrellas" by Dave Gregory.

Trivia:

Andy originally wanted the cover to have a very close shot of the pubic area of a young girl on one side and that of a young man on the other side, with meadow flowers for the hairs. This was changed at the last minute due to the fear that the album would not to be stocked by High Street record shops. The new cover is based on a print from a classical music concert programme from 1953 by Hans Erni. Andy altered the boy's guitar to a flute.

What look like Catholic school girl uniforms that the trio is wearing on the inner sleeve are in fact Quaker costumes.

"Summer's Cauldron" was called "Drowning Here in Summer's Cauldron" at an early stage.

"Big Day" was originally written for The Dukes' 25 O'Clock.

XTC recorded an instrumental demo version of "Little Lighthouse" during the Skylarking sessions, with Todd Rundgren producing.

On "That's Really Super, Supergirl" Prairie Prince played a sample of the tin can snare drum off Deface the Music, Todd Rundgren's 1980 album.

Songs written, demoed, rehearsed, and/or recorded around the Skylarking days include:
"Across This Antheap" (re-recorded and released on Oranges & Lemons);
"Dear God" ("Grass" single B-side; later released in its own right);
"Dream Down" (demo version retitled "Ridgeway Path" and released on The Bull with the Golden Guts);
"Extrovert" ("Grass" 12" B-side);
"Find the Fox"* (demo version released on "The Meeting Place" 12" B-side and on the compilation Coat of Many Cupboards);
"Gangway, Electric Guitar Is Coming Through" (unreleased);
"Let's Make a Den" (demo version released on "The Meeting Place" 12" B-side and on the compilation Coat of Many Cupboards);
"Little Lighthouse" (demo version released on Jules Verne's Sketchbook, later re-recorded and released on The Dukes' Psonic Psunspot);
"Obscene Procession" (demo version released on Jules Verne's Sketchbook);

Notes

The first British issue came with a circular cover and circular inner sleeve, later replaced with a regular square cover and square inner sleeve. It is said that the French issue followed the same path, but the second issue's cover had a round wheel printed on a square cover, with the corners left white. Australian, German, and Greek editions were, at least initially, marketed with circular covers and sleeves imported from the UK.

Notes

Has no extra tracks although the track listings on the disc, booklet, and back inlay suggest otherwise. This must have been a manufacturing error because purchasers of this version were advised to send their copies to Virgin to get them replaced with the 14-track version.

Some copies of Version 4 (CD Version 2) made by Polydor & Du Pont Optical (PDO) in the UK between 1988 and 1993 suffer from a problem called "CD bronzing," which is corrosion of the aluminum in the disc that will eventually make the CD unplayable. PDO might also have pressed Version 3 (CD Version 1), but it is not clear whether that version has the same defect.

Recording Data:

Produced by David Lord and XTC. Recorded at Crescent Studios, Bath, Avon, March-July 1984. Engineered by David Lord with additional engineering by Glenn Tommey. "Wake Up," "Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her, Kiss Her," and "This World Over" mixed by David Lord and XTC. Overdubs made at Odyssey Recording Studios, London, May 1984. "All You Pretty Girls," "Shake You Donkey Up," and all tracks on side B mixed by Phil Thornalley and XTC at RAK Studios, London, July-August 1984. Phil Thornalley was assisted by Matt Barry.

Personnel: Andy Partridge - vocals, electric guitars, Linn drums and harmonica. Colin Moulding - vocals, bass guitars. David Gregory - electric guitars, piano, Mellotron and synthesisers. With the help of: Pete Phipps - drums. Stuart Gordon - violin and viola. Annie Huchrak - choir on "Wake Up" (arranged by David Lord). Steve Saunders - euphonium on "Seagulls."

Trivia:

"Shake You Donkey Up" was written in pidgin English style intentionally to create an "ethnic" feeling. A promotional film of the song employing animation was considered but rejected by Virgin.

The origin of "Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her, Kiss Her" dates back to the English Settlement days.

The band used the sound of the Swindon Rail Works' hooter at the beginning of "The Meeting Place." The hooter, last heard on 26 March 1996, the day the works were shut down for good, was recorded by Dave Gregory off a TV documentary about the Rail Works.

Dave Gregory correctly identifies the origin of the driving wheel on the cover of The Big Express: "[It] belongs to a Modified Hall class locomotive no. 7903 'Foremarke Hall,' built in Swindon Works April 1949 (withdrawn from service June 1964). The loco belongs to the Swindon & Cricklade Railway Society, based at Tadpole Lane, Blunsdon, near Swindon. Actually, it's not an express engine at all, but it was the only one we could find. Anyone spotted the little green bug?"

Songs written, demoed, rehearsed, and/or recorded around the The Big Express days include:
"Blue Overall" ("This World Over" single B-side);
"Broomstick Rhythm" (demo version released on Jules Verne's Sketchbook);
"Don't Take Drugs" (unreleased);
"Don't You Ever Dare Call Me Chickenhead" (demo version released on The Bull with the Golden Guts);
"Little Lies" (unreleased);
"Love Bomb" (unreleased);
"Mantis on Parole (Homo Safari Series No.4)" ("Wake Up" single B-side);

Recording Data:

Produced by Steve Nye/XTC except "Great Fire." "Wonderland," "Deliver Us from the Elements," "Human Alchemy," and "Funk Pop a Roll" remixed by Alex Sadkin and Phil Thornalley/XTC. "Great Fire" produced by Bob Sargeant and XTC.

Basic tracks recorded at The Manor, Oxfordshire, and Genetic Studios ("The House of Rushent"), Berkshire, September-December 1982. Mixed at Air Studios, London. Engineer: Steve Nye. "Wonderland," "Deliver Us from the Elements," "Human Alchemy," and "Funk Pop a Roll" remixed at RAK Studios, London. Engineer: Phil Thornalley (for Alex Sadkin). "Great Fire" recorded and mixed at Odyssey Recording Studios, London, February 1983. Engineer: Mark Dearnley (for Bob Sargeant). Assistant engineers, tape jockeys, tea makers, gophers etc.: Jim Russell, Howard Gray, Gavin Greenaway, Marcellus Frank, Mike Nocito. Disc mastering: Ian "half-cut" Cooper at The Town House.

Personnel: Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, Dave Gregory - voices and instruments. Peter Phipps - drums. Terry Chambers - drums on "Beating of Hearts" and "Wonderland." Steve Nye - mini Korg on "Beating of Hearts" and Mellotron on "Deliver Us from the Elements." Gavin Wright and Nigel Warren-Green - strings on "Great Fire." Thanks to Hans the wind for De Vente.

Trivia:

The band photo on the inner sleeve was originally to be on the album cover, but the idea was scrapped by Virgin.

An alternative cover, with a picture of the four members as gardeners with "fruit" heads, was designed to match the album's working title "Fruit," but did not see the light of day. Andy hoped that the album would be released with four different covers that all smelt of different fruits.

Notes

Contains five fewer tracks than the original two-disc set. The missing five tracks are "Yacht Dance," "Leisure," "Knuckle Down," "Fly on the Wall," and "Down in the Cockpit." The American issue used different editing from the Canadian and South African; for details see Notes on Continuity below.

Notes on LP Covers

The cover is a single (not gatefold) sleeve regardless of whether the album consists of one disc or two discs. Initially the British two-disc edition was meant to be a limited edition, but a single disc edition was never issued. The original UK edition had a textured cover with a white, non-textured horse figure debossed on it, resembling the actual landscape in Wiltshire where, amidst the green grass on the hill, the Uffington White Horse is carved out of the chalk. Two inner sleeves, one for each disc, provided the lyrics. In later issues, however, over several stages the green band name and album title were changed to white (presumably upon the record company's request), the textured cover got smoothed, and finally the printed inner sleeves were gone. It has been reported that there were copies with no band name or title on the cover, which must have been a printing error.

Most overseas issues respected the original concept on the cover, but not many used exactly the same design, and a lot of them reduced the two discs to one. The most faithful was the two-disc Australian issue, although their labels were black instead of green. The Canadian issue left the horse textured, and the French two-disc set opted to print the band name on the front and the album title on the back. Probably the most questionable example is the second (or later) run of the Italian edition, which came with a brown cover!

Other unique covers: The American single-disc issue on Epic used a much brighter green colour for the cover and an alternative letter set for the track listing on the back cover. This design was adopted by the South African edition, which in fact has the American catalogue number AL 37943 on the labels along with its own; The South African issue also printed two eye-catching copies that look like they have round stickers on the cover saying: "CONTAINS THE HITS: 'SENSES WORKING OVERTIME' 'RUNAWAYS' 'MELT THE GUNS' 'BALL AND CHAIN'" and "IT'S NEW MUSIC NOW"; and Mexican copies, at least the one we have, come with a sticker on the shrinkwrap saying "TECNO POP".

Some sleeves open at the right-hand side rather than the top. These ones originate from France, Greece (where a French cover was used), Israel, Mexico, USA (Epic), Yugoslavia, and possibly some others we are not aware of.

A few countries, such as Israel and Japan, preferred a lyric sheet to a printed inner sleeve.

Notes on Continuity

Like Black Sea and most other XTC albums, many of the tracks on English Settlement segue into the next track, with some songs fading in as the previous ones fade out. On Version 1 and Version 5 (CD Version 2), "Runaways" continues into "Ball and Chain" for about four seconds and "No Thugs" continues into "Yacht Dance" for about six seconds. "Snowman" starts about twenty seconds before the previous track, "English Roundabout," ends.

The difference in continuity between Version 1 and Version 2 is that on the latter "Jason" cross-fades with "Snowman," whose intro is a little shorter than on Version 1. "English Roundabout" does not connect to the next, final track.

On Version 3, the Canadian and South African issues are edited the same way as Version 2, except that "No Thugs in Our House" and "It's Nearly Africa" cross-fade. The "It's Nearly Africa" on these two editions (at least our reference copies) skips at the same place, which makes one suspect the same corrupted master was used in both countries. On the American issue, "Jason" is not joined with "Snowman," and "No Thugs in Our House" is almost separate from "It's Nearly Africa."

Recording Data:

Produced and mixed by Hugh Padgham and XTC. Engineered by Hugh Padgham. Assisted by Howard Gray. Recorded at The Manor, Oxfordshire, England, October-November 1981.

Personnel: Colin Moulding - lead and backing vocals, fretless bass, fender bass, mini Korg, piano, and percussion. Andy Partridge - lead and backing vocals, electric guitar, semi-acoustic electric 12-string guitar, semi-acoustic electric guitar, acoustic guitar, mini Korg, Prophet V, anklung, alto sax, percussion, and frog. Dave Gregory - electric 12-string guitar, electric guitars, nylon-string Spanish guitar, semi-acoustic electric 12-string guitar, Prophet V, mini Korg, backing vocals, percussion, and piano. Terry Chambers - drums, drum synthesiser, percussion, and backing vocals. Vocal support by Hugh Padgham on "Ball and Chain" and Hans de Vente on "It's Nearly Africa."

Trivia:

Andy wrote the lyrics to "Leisure" during the Drums and Wires sessions. At the end of the song he sings a few bars of the popular jazz number "Lazy Bones" (Hoagy Carmichael/Johnny Mercer).

"Senses Working Overtime" was once called "With Wonderment" (or "The Wonderment"), while "Yacht Dance" was "Collecting Honey for the Queen."

"Melt the Guns" used to be "Holding the Baby."

"It's Nearly Africa" was originally written as "Primitive Now," then renamed "Drum and Wire."

Songs written, demoed, rehearsed, and/or recorded around the English Settlement days include:
"Blame the Weather"* ("Senses Working Overtime" single B-side);
"Cockpit Dance Mixture" ("Ball and Chain" 12" B-side);
"Egyptian Solution (Homo Safari Series No.3)" ("Senses" 12");
"Hangin' Around" (unreleased);
"Heaven Is Paved with Broken Glass" ("Ball and Chain" single B-side);
"Lazy Day Play"* (unreleased);
"My Brother Ralph"* (unreleased);
"Punch and Judy" ("Ball and Chain" single B-side);
"Snowflakes in a Mound" (unreleased);
"Still at War with the Japs"* (unreleased); and
"Tissue Tigers (The Arguers)" ("Senses" single B-side).
All songs written by Andy Partridge and *Colin Moulding.

The band also recorded the so-called "drunken session" (or "heavy metal session") during the English Settlement sessions. The material they played was a mixture of their own compositions and their renditions of rock classics. The following tracks are known to exist: "Shavin' Brush Boogie"; "Pupil Hayes" (Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze"); "Community Worker Breakdown" (Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown"); "Whole Lotta Age" (Zepp's "Whole Lotta Love"); "Orange Dust"; "Orange Dust Slight Return"; and "Silver Sewing Machine" (Hawkwind's "Silver Machine"). All remain unreleased.

XTC won the Edison award in Holland for the Best Album of the Year with English Settlement. Also, in Italy the album was honoured with the Premio XX award for joint Best Pop Album of 1982.

The curious end-groove scratches that read "WADDIES 6X RULES Hic!" on side D of the UK edition refer to the local Wadworths beer made in a little village just outside Swindon.

Notes

The original British issue and many first overseas issues came in a green paper outer sleeve with an "XTC BLACK SEA" logo on the front. Copies issued without an outer sleeve sometimes had the band name and the album title printed at the top right of the picture cover. Some countries preferred to use an inner sleeve with lyrics printed on it instead of a lyric sheet.

The Australian reissue (V 2173) had a large "XTC BLACK SEA" logo printed in white on the cover.

Virgin Canada used a black plastic bag with a handle instead of a green paper sleeve. The logo was printed in white on it.

Mexican copies had a green sticker of the logo on the cover.

The 8-track cartridge and cassette versions on Virgin/Atlantic may have been manufactured, even though they may not been released. The cartridge, if it exists, may contain the tracks in a different running order.

Recording Data:

Produced by Steve Lillywhite. Engineered by Hugh Padgham. Tape operated by Nick Launay and Phil Vinnal. Recorded at The Town House, London, June-July 1980.

Personnel: Terry Chambers - Tama drums, Snyper drum synth and free form voice. Dave Gregory - guitars, synth, piano, and the odd vox humana or two. Colin Moulding - sings his songs and plays his Epiphone Newport. Andy Partridge - his own voice, a guitar he thinks he owns, a synth he's not so sure who owns, and other noises that could have been anybody's.

Trivia:

The crackling sound in the intro of "Respectable Street" was taken from a scratched copy of Peter Gabriel's third album, on which Dave had played guitar on two tracks.

The voices heard on "No Language in Our Lungs" were taken from the British TV documentary programme Whicker's World, hosted by journalist Alan Whicker.

Almost every track on the LP is joined together without a gap. The last five or so seconds of "Cuba" overlap with "Love at First Sight" and the last eight or so seconds of "Rocket" go into "No Language." "Towers of London" cross-fades with "Paper and Iron" for a about five seconds as well.

Songs written, demoed, rehearsed, and/or recorded around the Black Sea days include:
"Jump the Gap" (unreleased, developed into "Travels in Nihilon");
"Monkeys in Human Skin Suits" (unreleased);
"Pretty Pretty Two Face" (unreleased);
"She Broke the Circle" (aka "Day in the Box") (unreleased);
"Spy in Space" (unreleased, later became "Living through Another Cuba");
"Walking to Work" (unreleased);
a slow version of "Towers of London" (recorded at PolyGram Studio; released as "rejected single recording" on Coat of Many Cupboards);
a dub version of "Living through Another Cuba" (ditto);
"Don't Lose Your Temper" ("Generals and Majors" single B-side);
"Smokeless Zone"* ("Generals and Majors" freebie single);
"The Somnambulist" ("Smokeless Zone" B-side);
"Ban the Bomb"* (unreleased); and
"I Overheard"* (unreleased).
All songs written by Andy Partridge and *Colin Moulding.

"Take This Town," written especially by Andy for the film Times Square, was also recorded during the Black Sea sessions. Released as a single on RSO.

Soon after the recording of Black Sea was completed, Colin went back into The Town House to record three songs: "Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen," "I Need Protection," and "Cheap Perfume." The first two songs were released as a single under the pseudonym The Colonel.

Notes

In Britain, the first 20,000 copies included the free 7" single "Chain of Command" b/w "Limelight" (VDJ 30) and a gatefold insert with lyrics to all previously released songs as well as Drums and Wires songs.

Some overseas editions (see also Version 2 below) included a gatefold insert similar to the British one while others included a lyric sheet for this album only, or no insert at all.

On the British insert, Colin, instead of Andy, is credited as the writer of "Complicated Game." This error was repeated in inserts included in some overseas editions.

Notes

Adds the two tracks from the free 7" single to the track list of Version 1. The disc label lists "Hop" as track 3 but actually plays "Day In Day Out" in that spot, and does not list "Limelight" and "Chain of Command" but does include them as listed below. This version is also known to have been packaged with a cover and back inlay on which the track listings do not match the contents of the disc.

The earliest British issue was probably pressed in Japan, despite the disc label claiming that it was "Manufactured in the U.K."

The German issue was heavily exported overseas (possibly to the UK as well).

Notes

Adds "Hop" and the two tracks from the free 7" single after the original LP tracks. Dave's legendary "Why stop there?" studio verite comment precedes "Ten Feet Fall" on this edition.

The Japanese edition is one of the "XTC Original Paper Sleeve Collection" series. The disc label, which is green with a red line across it, does not list the three bonus tracks. Have a magnifying glass at the ready to read the dwarfed gatefold insert.

Notes

In Britain, the first 15,000 copies of Go 2 contained the free five-track 12" EP Go+ (VS 23312), plus a gatefold insert featuring a colour portrait of the band on one side and artwork contributed by the band members on the other side. There are a couple more items included in some copies: a poster of White Music and a plain white inner sleeve with a message, hand-stamped in red ink, that reads: "This is an inner sleeve or bag of an album by XTC called GO 2 with a catalogue number of V2108." Reportedly, for the very first batch of Go 2, the LP and EP came shrinkwrapped together in clear polythene, without the White Music poster but with the hand-stamped inner sleeve. Later copies omitted the ingredients gradually over several stages of repressing/reprinting/reshipping.

Notes

Adds the single "Are You Receiving Me?" to LP Version 1 as track 6 on side A.

Almost all LPs issued overseas (and all CD editions) include an extra track, "Are You Receiving Me?," which was re-recorded with Martin Rushent after the Go 2 sessions and released in the UK as a single only. The song was not listed on all LPs that included it, and when it was listed, it was not always given the correct producer's name.

The Canadian LP issues had "XTC GO 2" printed in the centre at the top of the front cover. Some overseas pressings reproduced the messages from the original British edition's disc labels. The 8-track cartridge version may contain the tracks in a different order. Details unknown.

The French (first issue) and Yugoslavian editions had a cover design based on the band's picture from the British gatefold insert.

British copies exported to Germany were given stickers with the German catalogue number 200169320 on them.

Notes

Adds the single "Are You Receiving Me?" to Version 1 as track 6.

The first pressings of the British Go 2, Drums and Wires, and The Compact XTC CDs are most likely to have been manufactured in Japan ("CTA Co. Ltd." can be seen on the discs' centre rings), despite the disc labels claim that they were "Manufactured in the U.K."

Notes

Adds the single "Are You Receiving Me?" to Version 1 as track 13.

The Japanese edition is one of the "XTC Original Paper Sleeve Collection" series. It even includes a miniature replica of the Go+ cover! The disc label, which is green with a red line across it, reproduces the message from the original label, listing the original 12 tracks.

Recording Data:

Produced and engineered by John Leckie at Abbey Road Studios Two and Three, London, August-September 1978. Assistant engineers: Haydn Bendall and Peter James at Abbey Road, and Andy Llewelyn and Jess Sutcliff at Matrix. "Life Is Good in the Greenhouse" mixed by Andy Partridge. "Are You Receiving Me?" produced by Martin Rushent. Recorded at The Manor, Oxfordshire.

Personnel: Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, Barry Andrews, and Terry Chambers.

Trivia:

According to the book Song Stories by XTC and Neville Farmer, the album's full title is XTC's Go 2.

Suggested producers included Brian Eno (who expressed interest in joining the band in 1977) and Nick Lowe.

The title "Meccanik Dancing" refers to the giant discotheque chain Mecca. By May 1978 "Meccanik Dancing" and "Crowded Room" (the latter written by Colin from his impressions of Europe in January 1978) were part of the band's live sets.

The "Brian" of "Battery Brides (Andy Paints Brian)" is Eno, to whom the song is dedicated.

"My Weapon" features Terry's backing vocals.

"Super-Tuff" was recorded almost live, and was the only Barry track XTC played on stage.

Terry and Barry sing backing vocals on "I Am the Audience."

19 tracks were recorded during the Go 2 sessions. With 12 songs eventually appearing on the album, presumably the 7 outtakes were: "Are You Receiving Me?" (released on Coat of Many Cupboards); "Instant Tunes"* ("Are You Receiving Me?" single B-side); "Looking for Footprints"* (Flexipop! magazine flexidisc); "Strange Tales, Strange Tails" (partially re-recorded version released on "Respectable Street" single B-side); "Sargasso Bar"** (unreleased); "Things Fall to Bits"** (released on Coat of Many Cupboards); and "Us Being Us"** (released on Coat of Many Cupboards). Rehearsed but not recorded were "Primitive Now" (aka "Drum and Wire"), which shared the same exotic chords as "Jazz Love" (a pre-XTC composition), and "Mousetrap"**. Another Barry song called "Rossmore Road" may or may not have been rehearsed. All songs written by Andy Partridge, *Colin Moulding, and **Barry Andrews.

Barry Andrews reworked on "Sargasso Bar" and "Mousetrap" for his solo EP Town and Country after leaving the band in January 1979. "Rossmore Road" appeared on his second (1980) and third (1981) singles.

Also produced during the Go 2 sessions were the five tracks included in Go+, the free 12" EP that came with the first 15,000 copies of Go 2.

Andy's "You're My Drug," which appeared on The Dukes of Stratosphear's Psonic Psunspot album in 1987, was originally written in 1978.

Notes

Disc Labels

The original UK edition of White Music had one of Virgin Records' standard designs for its labels: overlapped pink and red "Virgin" letters on a blue and white background. This design was used for Virgin's LP releases issued between January and September 1978 (approximately). It seems, however, that copies of White Music pressed overseas during this period did not have the same label design as the British one, but rather had one of the company's earlier designs.

For example, the initial Canadian edition had the colour mirrored girl and dragon label that was being used by Virgin UK in the early to mid '70s. French (the first issue), Japanese, and New Zealand copies were pressed with another design: a yellowish mirrored girl on a graded green background, which was being used in the UK just before the blue and white one.

As Virgin UK introduced the more familiar green/red label design (a red line on a green background on the A side and a green line on a red background on the B side) for their releases from the autumn of 1978 (Go 2, released in October 1978, had this), most overseas branches took up the new design on their subsequent pressings.

Covers

The original UK cover had the album title printed in matte white on a white glossy background in the centre at the top of the front cover. Some pressings from Australia, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, and the USA were made a little more conspicuous with a slight strengthening of the contrast between the title and background, while others maintained the authenticity of the original, leaving the title almost invisible.

Notes

Adds six singles tracks and "Traffic Light Rock" from the Virgin Sampler LP Guillotine to the original LP version.

In Britain, White Music, Black Sea, and Mummer CDs were released simultaneously. Copies of UK CDs exported to Germany were given stickers with German catalogue numbers (258 288, etc.) on them until Virgin UK started to print both UK and German numbers on the cover. A while after the first release of CDs, Virgin UK would reduce the price (calling them "Mid-Price", "Compact Price," or "Virgin Value") and remarket them. In Germany, copies with numbers that had the suffix -217 were sold at a "nice price" (the suffix -217 was the German budget price code for LPs).

Recording Data:

Produced and engineered by John Leckie. Recorded at The Manor in two weeks from 15 October 1977. Mixed at The Manor and Advision. Tapes worked by Alan "Jaffa" Douglas.

Personnel: Andy Partridge - guitar & voice. Colin Moulding - bass & voice. Barry Andrews - steam piano & clapped out organs. Terry Chambers - just drums.

Trivia:

Most songs recorded for this first album were written around 1975, with "Neon Shuffle" even dating back to 1973, during the time the group called themselves The Helium Kidz.

"Radios in Motion" was originally called "Volcano."

"All Along the Watchtower" was recorded live at The Manor studio. Instead of "Watchtower" XTC nearly did "Citadel" from The Rolling Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request.

Of the 17 tracks recorded during the White Music sessions, 10 were used. "I'm Bugged" and "New Town Animal in a Furnished Cage" were brought from the 3D EP sessions to make the final selection of 12.

Outtakes are "Let's Have Fun"* (released on Coat of Many Cupboards); "Hang On to the Night" ("Statue of Liberty" single B-side); "Traffic Light Rock" (Virgin sampler LP Guillotine); "Refrigeration Blues" (unfinished and unreleased); "Heatwave"* (released as "Heatwave Mark 2 Deluxe" on Coat of Many Cupboards); and Barry Grey's "Fireball XL5/Fireball Dub" (released on Coat of Many Cupboards). Songs written by Andy Partridge and *Colin Moulding.

Note that the "Heatwave" on the White Music CD is not from the White Music sessions.

Notestrydown.jpg

In most countries, the CD version of Nonsuch initially came in a "special limited edition gold etched CD case" (the term used in UK adverts) and the disc itself features a picture of the Nonsuch palace drawn in gold on a scarlet background.

Some copies of the first American edition included an insert with a Geffen Records XTC CD back catalogue that has comments from Andy on each album.

The latest Japanese edition (TOCP-65720) is one of the "XTC Original Paper Sleeve Collection" series. The disc label adopts the original LP's design, the Nonsuch palace. It also includes a paper sleeve for "record one" and a gatefold insert for "record two."

Trivia:

"The Disappointed" was originally written for Terry Hall (ex-Specials, Fun Boy Three, Colourfield, etc.). The song was nominated for an Ivor Numero award in the Best Song category.

A working title for "Holly Up on Poppy" was "Holly High on Poppy."

"Then She Appeared" (by The Golden -- yet another pseudonym) and another song called "It's Snowing Angels" (by Choc Cigar Chief Champion) were originally intended for a give-away flexi disc for the British music magazine Strange Things Are Happening. Although the DAT masters of the songs, which were recorded solo by Andy in the Shed and did not feature The Dukes, were indeed supplied to the magazine before it folded, it seems that no flexis were actually pressed up.

"War Dance" dates from the The Big Express era and was re-recorded for Nonsuch in a radically revamped from.

CDs and 7" singles of "Wrapped in Grey" (with "Bungalow") were manufactured but shelved before release.

It is said that Andy and Colin prepared 32-35 songs for the album.

Apart from those that appeared on the album, songs written, demoed, rehearsed, and/or recorded around the Nonsuch days include:
"Always Winter [but] Never Christmas" (demo version released on Window Box);
"Car Out of Control"* (unreleased);
"Didn't Hurt A Bit"* (demo version released on "I'm the Man Who Murdered Love" single; partially re-recorded version appeared on the compilation Coat of Many Cupboards);
"Down a Peg"* (demo version released on "Pumpkinhead" B-side);
"Goodbye Humanosaurus" (demo version released on The Bull with the Golden Guts);
"Goosey Goosey" (demo version released on The Bull with the Golden Guts);
"It's Snowing Angels" (demo version released on Window Box);
"I'm the Man Who Murdered Love" (re-recorded and released on Wasp Star);
"Life Is Always" (unreleased);
"Playground" (re-recorded and released on Wasp Star);
"Rip Van Ruben [Reuben]" (demo version released on Window Box);
"Where Did All the Ordinary People Go?"* (unreleased);
"Wonder Annual" (unreleased); and
"You and the Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful" (re-recorded and released on Wasp Star).
All songs written by Andy Partridge and *Colin Moulding.
